How to Pick a Personal Item for Your Next Flight!
Although I prefer one bag travel, a two bag setup can sometimes make more sense depending on the needs of your trip. When I travel with two bags there are a few characteristics I look for in a personal item for a flight (demonstrated wonderfully here by the @patagonia Mini MLC, but there are many great options that have these as well):
1. Fits under airplane seat: maybe an obvious one, but critical so that you don’t have ti worry about overhead space
2. Stands on its own: super convenient when placing the bag next to you when you’re waiting at the gate or grabbing a coffee and pairs nicely with #3
3. Top quick access to essentials: whether your bag is standing next to you or it’s under the seat, a top quick access pocket will let you easily grab things like your charger, headphones, or wallet
4. Easy laptop access: when you are going through tsa it’s very likely you will have to remove your devices from your bag so you want something that will make it as easy to get your laptop or tablet in and out of your bag
5. External water bottle pocket: this is becoming more rare these days, but it’s still helpful to be able to store a water bottle (or other accessories) in the outside of your bag for quicker access
6. Luggage passthrough: when traveling with a roller bag it’s great to have an easy and secure way to rest your personal item on your suitcase to save weight on your back and for easier transport around the airport and through the aisles on your flight!
