One of the cool features of NASCAR 06: Total Team Control was that you could plug a USB headset into your PS2 and communicate with your crew chief and spotter directly. It made managing the race a touch easier, and provided another layer of immersion to the game.

However, the game didn't just take into consideration basic race info when accounting for what the player might speak into their headset. If you decided to get a little "spicy" with your language, your crew chief would give you some stern reprimands, up to and including (apparently) being fined by NASCAR for the inappropriate language. I don't know if you were actually fined in-game for dropping too many F-bombs - it would be extremely funny if you were, though. Either way, I figured I'd make a quick compilation video of all the quips your crew chief will give you.

This feature actually reflected the state of NASCAR in 2005. Starting in 2004, if you used inappropriate language and were caught doing so on a NASCAR broadcast, NASCAR would fine you $10,000 and 25 championship points. It was mostly in response to the 2004 Super Bowl half-time show, and the controversy that surrounded that (the mid-2000s were a wild time, man). Once the heat from that died down, and the threat of being fined by the FCC dwindled, NASCAR eventually stopped enforcing this rule. I think the last driver to be assessed a points penalty for profanity was Tony Stewart after he won his second Brickyard 400 in 2007. Jeff Gordon, for example, wasn't fined after calling Brad Keselowski a "dipshit" after the 2014 Texas fall race (he wasn't fined for the naughty language, anyway - the brawl that preceded it was a whole other matter).

Notable recipients of this penalty in 2004 and 2005 were (all unsurprisingly) Johnny Sauter, Ron Hornaday, Shane Hmiel, and Robby Gordon. And, of course, Dale Earnhardt Jr., who got fined after winning the 2004 EA Sports 500 - a penalty that arguably cost him that year's championship. Thanks a lot, Justin Timberlake.
