The action at Jobbie Nooner is usually limited to water and land at Gull Island in Lake St. Clair, but for this year's event it will also be 4,000 feet in the air.

Jobbie Nooner partygoers on Friday will be entertained by the Red Bull Motown Swoop, a competition involving eight professional skydivers in an aerial contest. In addition, several local celebrities will be among the judges.

"This is the first time the Red Bull Air Force will be at Jobbie Nooner," said Red Bull spokeswoman Kelli Shives. "They perform across the globe and people really enjoy watching their acrobatic skills. It's a very cool thing."

The skydivers will compete for the best-looking "swoop" with a parachute freefalling one by one out of a plane at speeds of up to 70 mph. The event will take place from noon to 3 p.m. over Lake St. Clair near Gull Island in St. Clair County.

Skydiving expertise is not needed for judging the swoop competition as Red Bull officials say it's all about putting on a good show.

Celebrity judges for the event include Kid Rock guitarist Jason Krause of Harrison Township, Detroit hip-hop artist Dan "Hush" Carlisle of Grosse Pointe Woods and Dirty Americans lead singer Matthew "Myron" Kozuch.

Participants selected by the Red Bull Air Force include Jay Moledzki, Pablo Hernandez, TJ Landgren, Matt Lewis, Travis Fienhage, Marat Leiras and Red Bull Air Force members Jeff Provenzano and Clint Clawson. Red Bull will have a boat on the lake near the party.

Jobbie Nooner is the annual floating celebration of boaters who skip work for a day. It started years ago when a group of auto workers — or "jobbies" — ditched work to party on their boats.
