What really happened on Juneteenth? A brief history of emancipation 🇺🇸
Wondering what Juneteenth is, and why it’s a holiday?
On the first Juneteenth – June 19, 1865 – Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and read General Order No. 3, which announced the end of slavery.
Since then, Juneteenth has celebrated one of the most significant events in U.S. history — the end of the Civil War and the emancipation of Black Americans.
Freedom didn’t happen all at once, though. For Tiffany Flowers, an officer in Southern New Hampshire University’s employee resource group, Black Leaders Aspiring to Zealously Elevate (BLAZE), Juneteenth honors an important beginning.
“Juneteenth is an acknowledgement of the beginnings of change,” Flowers said.
