Attachment And Overlay In External Reference AutoCAD 2020 | Attachment VS Overlay
When we attach an xref to a drawing, the ATTACH EXTERNAL REFERENCES dialogue box is displayed. The REFERENCE TYPE area of this dialogue box has two options, ATTACHMENT & OVERLAY, the ATTACHMENT option is selected by default. The advantage of selecting the OVERLAY option is that you can access the desired drawing instead of the drawing along with its xreffed attachment.
For example, consider three people working on three different drawings that are a part of the same project. The first draftsman is working on the drawing of BOLT, the second draftsman is working on the drawing of NUT, and the third is on the drawing of WASHER.
The name of the drawings is BOLT, NUT, and WASHER respectively.
Assume that the draftsman working on the drawing of BOLT, selects the attachment option to xref the drawing of NUT, so that he or she can check the drawing of NUT according to the BOLT drawing.
After insertion, the BOLT drawing will comprise the BOLT drawing (current drawing) along with the NUT drawing (xreffed drawing).
Now, if the draftsman working on the WASHER drawing xrefs the BOLT drawing to check the location of the WASHER fittings with respect to the BOLT drawing, he/she will get the drawing that has the NUT drawing as well as the BOLT drawing.
This is because the NUT drawing was xreffed in the BOLT drawing by selecting the attachment option.
In the above example, the draftsman working on the WASHER drawing may not require the NUT drawing. This is because, at this stage, he/she is more interested in checking the WASHER fittings with respect to the BOLT drawing. So the NUT drawing that is xreffed with the BOLT drawing needs to be avoided.
This can be done by selecting the overlay option while x-referencing the NUT drawing in the BOLT drawing. This means that the draftsman working on the BOLT drawing needs to xref the NUT drawing by selecting the overlay option. Now, if the BOLT drawing is xreffed in some other drawing, the NUT drawing will not appear.
