Set against the backdrop of 1930s Venice, where the shadow of Fascism is beginning to rise, a young music student named Matthias arrives. He soon begins to mix with the local bourgeoisie, infiltrating the city's decadent, decaying high society. He finds himself drawn to Carla, a sophisticated, mature teacher and the mother of his close friend, Renato.
What begins as admiration soon deepens into a complex and forbidden love affair. As Matthias becomes entangled with Carla, he is pulled deeper into the secrets, moral compromises, and simmering tensions of a family clinging to its status. The situation is further complicated by the alluring presence of Carla's daughter, Elena (Ornella Muti), creating a volatile mix of desire, jealousy, and social politics as their world begins to crumble.
