Reverse Engineering a Damaged Plastic Panel Using 3D Scanning and 3D Printing

In this reverse engineering project, we started from a 3D scan of a completely damaged plastic panel. The 3D scan served as a crucial reference, providing a reliable starting point for the digital reconstruction process.

Using the scanned mesh, we created a fully parametric CAD model to accurately rebuild the original shape and geometry of the part, while removing all visible damage and deformation.

The final CAD model was exported in STEP format for compatibility with various CAD/CAM environments. It was then 3D printed at full scale (1:1) using FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) technology in a single piece.

This workflow—from 3D scanning to CAD modeling and 3D printing—demonstrates how reverse engineering can bring damaged parts back to life with high precision and minimal manual effort.
