SHOULD I BUY GOLD?..........
Ever since the financial crisis in 2008, agencies within the US federal government have been trying everything possible in an attempt to re-vitalize the US economy.
The seriousness of the derivatives and housing crises, without doubt, made it necessary to use very new financial methods of propping up capital markets. The US Federal Reserve introduced a policy referred to as "quantitative easing" (printing more and more money). This was meant to get us out of the crisis.
Quantitative easing has since been copied by other countries central banks, most recently the Bank of Japan. The main problem with quantitative easing is that it creates numerous serious long term problems relating to retirement investments.
To fully understand exactly what quantitative is and why the US Federal Reserve decided it was necessary, we must understand standard methods usually applied with central bank intervention. Historically, control of short term interest rates has been used to manipulate the US economy. The theory has been that if interest rates are lowered, the demand for loans would increase, and the flow-on effect would be more investment in the economy. While money is being loaned out, money is created from nothing via the fractional reserve process, designed to expand the money supply to reduce the risk of financial asset deflation.
The difficulty is that interest rates that are artificially low, do not always work to achieve the result that is desired. As Japan chased well over a decade of its almost zero interest rate policy, its economy still floundered because conditions were so bad, businesses were hesitant to take advantage of low interest rates. Investment in real businesses stalled because investors knew the imbalances in the economy were not being rectified.
Take a look now at the price of gold from 2001 to 2011. In 2001, gold was selling at around $270 per ounce. When the 2008 recession struck, it was selling at approximately $800 per ounce. By 2011, gold peaked at an all-time high of almost $1,900 per ounce.
Through all of the US and international financial turmoil, gold remained the safe haven investment.
