GM Exec Announces EV Batteries with More Silicon Content

Transcript: Per InsideEVs, the push for better battery technology is leading automakers and battery companies to explore silicon anodes as a way to increase driving range and improve charging times. General Motors says we’ll see more silicon incorporated into EV batteries over the coming years, as the material offers better energy density compared to traditional graphite anodes.
Silicon-containing anodes have existed in small amounts for years, but their use is now expanding. Last year, Taiwanese startup ProLogium showcased a 100% silicon composite anode battery with an energy density of 321 watt-hours per kilogram—higher than current industry standards. It also demonstrated rapid charging, reaching 60% in just five minutes.
Several American startups, including Sila Nanotechnologies, Amprius, and Group 14, are also working on silicon anodes. Sila’s technology is already in the electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class, although its EPA range is only 239 miles with a 32-minute charge time from 10-80% on a 200 kW charger.
GM says that as these new materials enter the market, battery sizes will shrink, increasing efficiency and eventually reducing EV costs.
