API First Design is the principle of designing your application by first identifying and defining the contract needed to support the needs of your client. The OpenAPI Specification (formerly known as Swagger) has been enabling API First Design through documentation and codegen for over a decade. However, one of the challenges with using it is defining resources in a way that they can be reused. Ross Hamilton, principal software engineer at Deepsee.ai, shares some common pitfalls with using OAS for API First Design and how to overcome them. He includes how to build composable schemas, multi-file schemas, compiling multi-file schemas, and how to test and generate code from your schema.
