If you visit Cuevas de San Marcos, you can't miss the following sites if you want to learn about its heritage:
The Senda de los Milenios Interpretation Center. A place where you can travel back in time through the history and traditions of this town and the Sierra Norte region of Málaga, a natural viewpoint. It was created to showcase the cultural and environmental potential of the municipality of Cuevas de San Marcos and the northern region of Málaga.
It has several areas offering information on various highlights of the region and the municipality, emphasizing topics such as traditions, gastronomy, heritage, and history. Prehistory is given special attention, both at the regional and local levels.
The Aceña Waterwheel: Although we don't know when it was built, there are documentary references from the last quarter of the 18th century. Originally, the waterwheel was made of wood, but in the 1930s it was replaced by the current iron one.
A visit to the site is a truly delightful experience; watching the mechanism in operation, the sounds it makes, and the surrounding environment combine to create a truly special place.
-The Sierra del Camorro Fault Natural Monument is located in the massif of the same name. It was formed due to the Earth's internal forces that subjected this area to intense stress. It was declared a Natural Monument in 1999.
Furthermore, the limestone rocks give the surrounding area its characteristic whitish hue. These rocks, fractured and eroded by rain and wind, have created countless passageways and cavities typical of karst landscapes. Among these cavities is the Belda Cave, with its stalactite and stalagmite formations, where many of the prehistoric remains now on display in the municipal archaeological museum were discovered. The permanent pooling of water has created three easily accessible lakes within the area.
It is also one of the most important bat roosts in Europe.
-The Luís de Armiñán Bridge is a remarkable feat of engineering for its time; all the pieces are joined by rivets without any welding. It was one of the old transport routes between southern Córdoba and northern Málaga.
-Located in the historic center are the Church of San Marcos Evangelista and the Hermitage of the Virgen del Carmen. The former is the most representative monument of the municipality. Built in the 17th century and renovated at the end of the 18th century, its style blends late Baroque and Neoclassical elements, as can be seen in its monumental façade crowned with a triangular pediment.
The Hermitage of the Virgen del Carmen dates from the 18th century and was extensively restored at the end of the 19th century. It retains its original brick tower and ceramic roof. It is eclectic in style, dominated by Neo-Gothic forms with Neoclassical details.
