However, everyone was waiting for the V12 — the first twelve-cylinder engine in post-war Germany. This forced Daimler-Benz to postpone the premiere of its new S-Class for a couple of years, giving BMW an advantage and allowing them to outpace their competitor in sales of large executive sedans. In the early nineties, BMW would develop its own version of the V8, but this engine would become infamous due to its Nikasil coating.
