On October 15th, 2025, China launched 520 missiles at twelve US Navy warships in the East China Sea. The saturation attack included 240 DF-21D ballistic missiles, 180 YJ-18 supersonic cruise missiles, and 100 CJ-10 subsonic cruise missiles. Between 3:50-4:10 a.m., the twelve ships—eight Ticonderoga cruisers and four Arleigh Burke destroyers—fired every defensive missile in their arsenal: 48 SM-2s, 96 SM-6s, 128 ESSMs, 82 RAMs, plus Phalanx guns. They destroyed 487 of 520 missiles (93.7% intercept rate). But thirty-three missiles penetrated all defenses. USS Gettysburg, Vicksburg, and Cowpens were struck and sunk. Three more ships severely damaged. Total casualties: 312 wounded. This was the largest missile defense engagement in history, demonstrating both Aegis capability and the impossibility of perfect defense against saturation attacks.
