But for a quirk of fate, Tandy Corporation might have been the market setter and leader in personal computers instead of IBM. The TRS-80 was the leading choice for businesses and consumers in the 1970’s—more than a match for the Apple II and the Commodore PET—selling hundreds of thousands of units every year. Eventually, Steve Wozniak’s commitment to open source, IBM’s expedient choice of the same, and Commodore’s entry into low-end consumer computers would doom the hobby and electronics giant.
