LINKS TO AUDIO FILTER VIDEOS IN THIS TEXTBOX. Do Germanium transistors and Silicon transistor each have their own "sound color"? In this video I test the difference between a AC 187 (NPN Germanium) and a BC 547 (NPN Silicon) in an audio pre amplifier (approx. 0,3 % distortion). Take your own conclusions about possible sound "coloring" and/or do your own tests with different NPN Silicon and Germanium transistors with this circuit. By the way: I am almost sure that a germanium transistor audio amplifier has another sound color, compared to a silicon transistor amplifier. This is based on my experience and listening. The question is: which sound do you like? And/or: it is possible to give a Silicon amplifier a sound (with tone control) that resembles the sound of an (old) Germanium audio amplifier.
