Ban Gay Conversion Therapy
A big thanks to Pennsylvania's Governor Wolf for discouraging the use of so-called "Gay Conversion Therapy." Now it is time to ban it.
The executive order signed by Governor Wolf discourages state agencies from sending children to any therapist or therapeutic service that aims to change their sexual orientation or gender identity and prohibits state funds or resources from funding such therapists or programs.
These therapies are designed to change the sexual orientation or gender identity of LGBTQI+ youth. Researchers agree they do nothing helpful but are massively traumatic to youth participating in them and drastically increase their already-elevated risk of suicide.
The Adverse Childhood Experiences study defines emotional abuse as a parent or caretaker "swearing at you, insulting you, putting you down, humiliating you, or acting in a way that made you afraid that you might be physically hurt." Conversion therapy meets many of these criteria. A parent forcing a child to participate in this will likely further harm their relationship with their child. Conversion therapy is drastically harmful to children, and Governor Wolf is wise to restrict it.
As many states have done, Governor Wolf and the state legislature must go further and ban the practice.
