Indian Economic Updates : India Strengthens Steel Quality Norms
Amid Substandard Imports
The government may soon tighten quality norms in response to rising imports of substandard steel, particularly from China. Following an October review by the steel ministry, it was revealed that India’s steel sector faces increased vulnerability due to global trade diversions. In the first five months of this fiscal year, India imported 3.45 million tonnes of steel while exporting 1.92 million tonnes. The government aims to expand quality control orders, restricting imports of steel grades not produced locally. India currently imports ₹4,200 crore worth of non-Bureau of Indian Standards compliant steel annually.
