This knot is formed in the middle of a shoelace, with the ends then laced into a shoe in reverse and anchored at the bottom. The knot tightens and “self-locks” (like a ratchet). It allows re-tightening on the fly without first untying, plus there are no dangling loose ends (although the vertical bow looks pretty weird).
