I made this to demonstrate the "Ken Burns Effect", a famous documentary film technique, which is omnipresent. In this example, I recreated "The Civil War" with the video editing and animation software Kdenlive, which is free and open source.
The Position and Zoom effect (also known as Pan and Zoom) has been used primarily for creating the Ken Burns effect. Dissolve Transitions were used for fade to black, fade from black and crossfade effects

Full HD (FHD) 1920x1080 resolution thanks to (mosly) huge source images. Hight frame rate was used. High frame rate is a key to the Ken Burns effect. Cinema films have low frame rate (24 frames) while television has a higher frame rate (60 frames per second) which are interlaced but still allow for much more fluent animations. This is why the effect could not become popular in cinema film but did in television, it was endurable on TV and eye cancer on the cinema screen.
