[EXPERIMENT] Windsong Lyre | Genshin Impact | FL Studio MIDI Control - Kamisato Ayaka theme
This video is to blame as to why I ended up accidentally deleting my acoustic guitar cover of this Kamisato Ayaka's theme. I feel so stupid! 😅
So, anyway... This is a demo of me using the Windsong Lyre in Genshin Impact like a MIDI-controlled instrument using FL Studio (my DAW of choice). I can now basically send MIDI notes to Genshin Impact and make music with it!
The music was only created quickly so it's not really impressive. I also arranged it in a way that will allow most of the notes to be used.
How does this work?
The most important piece of this puzzle is Midikey2Key - a program that converts MIDI input into keypresses. I've been using the software to utilize my AKAI MPK Mini as a macro controller and this idea dawned on me a while back but never really put much effort into making it happen. So today, I configured the white keys of the 4th to 6th octaves of my keyboard to correspond to each of the notes available on the Windsong Lyre. It is worth noting that MidiKey2Key must be run as an administrator to be able to control the lyre. It won't work otherwise and I learned this frustratingly.
At this point, I could already control the lyre through my MIDI keyboard, but my main goal is to control it with FL Studio and I needed another piece of software to make that happen: loopMIDI. This software creates virtual MIDI ports to allow music software that can send or receive MIDI information to talk to each other. I just had to create a MIDI Out channel on FL Studio and... voila! It works!
Any DAW with MIDI out functionality should work, by the way.
There are some limitations such as monophony and delays especially on fast notes, but it's more or less expected. In the future, I plan to run this on a separate computer and connect them via a true MIDI interface with FL Studio also capturing the audio. Maybe that will work better considering the game won't be hogging resources that FL Studio would also need. I will also not need to Alt+Tab in and out of the game just to play notes.
