38 Direct Memory Access (DMA)
So, the lectures still haven't been added to the schedule. Tomorrow will be a month since I sent the request to the department. What do you think they said? Correct! Nothing. So I'm also publishing the final couple of lectures as recordings.
But really, that's not a big deal anymore. This video is the last one from the "Computer Architecture and Peripherals" course, which I designed almost two years ago to fit the hours initially allocated.
Obviously, if we had more hours, we could have learned how to work with the USB bus. We could have mastered working with peripherals in Windows and Linux. We could have played around with CAN and ModBus. We could have done a lot of other things. We haven't even gotten to memory protection in architecture, let alone virtualization and other interesting things...
But first of all, time for the course was limited even during the design process (and even more so now). Secondly, I had to drop two lab assignments along the way—SPI and DMA—because the students couldn't handle the volume. And without the labs, no one will remember anything. And thirdly... I was warned right away that the students' specialization is working with mobile devices. So no one will need it. And if they don't need it, no one will remember it. So I limited myself to what everyone needs. Mobile or desktop, the basics are still there. And if you don't have them, your code ends up inefficient and sometimes even buggy.
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank my main company (MIR LLC) for providing the equipment for the labs and the YouTube channel for posting lecture notes. For now, the video stream will be suspended. But perhaps something else interesting will appear there someday.
