The 12-Year Wait is Over: Why Your Linux Home Folder Now Has a "Projects" Directory
The new "Projects" folder appearing in your ~/ directory is the result of a long journey for standardization on the Linux desktop. Initiated by a 2014 feature request on the freedesktop.org bug tracker, the idea was to create a dedicated space for files that didn't belong in standard locations like Documents or Downloads—such as source code, CAD designs, or complex project assets.
For over a decade, this request remained unfulfilled, despite widespread user adoption of custom ~/Projects, ~/dev, or ~/code folders. The XDG User Directories standard, managed by the freedesktop project, finally implemented this change with the release of xdg-user-dirs version 0.20. This update formally defines XDG_PROJECTS_DIR to provide a predictable, standardized location.
This standardization benefits the entire ecosystem: applications (especially Flatpak sandboxed ones) gain a known default for project files, READMEs and install scripts can reference a common path, and backup tools can recognize project data more easily. The change is now rolling out, primarily on rolling-release distributions, marking the end of a 12-year wait for a simple but impactful improvement to Linux desktop organization.
