Description
This presentation will teach participants about the unique factors that influence Black women’s development of self-image; as well as how this image impacts socio-emotional functioning. Learners will leave with a better understanding of assessment and treatment strategies to effect change in African American girls, teens, and women. When practitioners are unprepared for culturally diverse clients the results range from miscommunication to ethical risks. Aversion is one potential reaction produced by anger from a feeling of rejection of cultural norms. Conversely, acceptance of inadequate treatment in submission to the dominant culture and/or professional authority yields unclear goals and limited expressiveness. Black women’s endurance, and adaptation to adversity has been largely represented as a badge of honor in media and society.
