The almost 17 years in which the military junta took power over Chile, chaired by General Augusto Pinochet (1915-2006), marked one of the most traumatic periods in the history of Chile, which as a society lived divided by the harsh coup d'état of 1973, the persecution of those considered ideological enemies, the regime's attempt to remain in power behind a constitutional façade and the two defeats at the polls against the united democratic opposition. In 1990, Pinochet freely handed over the Presidency to the winner of the 1989 elections, the Christian Democrat Patricio Aylwin, but he continued to command the Army until 1998, when he became senator for life. Then began a tortuous judicial saga that, begun in Spain and continued in his own country, registered several incrimination processes for the most serious corruption of Human Rights and for economic corruption. Old age and doubtful dementia were successfully argued by the lawyers of the former dictator, who was never brought to trial.
