The year 1995 marks the beginning of Google's history, which can be traced back to Stanford University. Over the next several years, #google was able to attract not just the interest of the academic community but also that of #siliconvalley venture investors. A hundred thousand dollars in the form of a cheque was presented to #larrypage and Sergey Brin by Sun's co-founder Andy Bechtolsheim, marking the formal beginning of Google Inc. It was in August of 1998 when this happened. After forming a team, its members moved out of the dormitories and into a garage in Menlo Park, California. Susan Wojcicki, the current CEO of YouTube, used to live in the house nearby, which had a garage. These funds allowed them to successfully complete the move. We spent those dawn and dusk hours working in an area with clunky desktop computers, a ping pong table, and a lively blue carpet.
Things were unconventional from the very beginning. For example, Google's initial server was built out of Legos, and the company's first "Doodle" was a stick figure in the logo explaining to site visitors that everyone at Google would be off that day to go to the Burning Man Festival in 1998. These two instances occur early in the history of the firm. Both of these examples demonstrate how creativity has always been a cornerstone of Google's culture. Our motto, "Don't be evil," encapsulated the spirit that drove our unique approach to problem-solving.
