Before writing was ever invented, billions of people across the ancient world spoke languages that left no recorded sentence behind — and yet we can still hear them. Through buried loanwords, ritual fossils, undeciphered scripts, and two centuries of comparative reconstruction, linguists have partially recovered ten of these vanished tongues, from the "banana languages" of pre-Sumerian Mesopotamia to Proto-Indo-European of the Eurasian steppe. This is the story of the lit edges of an immense dark continent of human speech.
