"Splatoon" differs from other third-person shooters by firing ink (or paint) instead of projectiles. The player also has the ability to transform into a squid-like creature, which allows them to glide faster, even vertically, in paint. In Splatoon's multiplayer mode, the goal is to splatter the playing field with their team's paint; the team that sprays more paint wins. "Splatoon" is a portmanteau of the English words "splat" and "platoon."
