Mortal Kombat is a franchise that looks simple from the outside. Two people stand opposite each other, someone shouts “Fight,” a ninja throws an ice ball, a movie star punches a god in the groin, and eventually somebody’s spine leaves their body like it just remembered an urgent appointment elsewhere. But I’ve come to find that beneath the fatalities, spikes, acid pits, and the deep commitment to turning human anatomy into a fireworks display, Mortal Kombat has one of the strangest, richest, and most unhinged mythologies in gaming. It is martial arts fused with dark fantasy, Hong Kong action, horror, mythology, cosmic war, and soap opera melodrama. It has gods, dragons, undead spectres, shape-shifting sorcerers, cyber-ninjas, cursed realms, immortal emperors, time resets, feuds, ancient prophecies, and enough betrayals to make Game of Thrones look like a playground disagreement.
