As a wedding photographer, I now know some of my own mistakes when I was looking for a photographer. So, here are some things (knowing what I know now about the industry) to take into consideration before you commit to one photographer:
Know what you want.
The style of wedding photography is rapidly changing. Most likely, the traditional poses of yore just won’t cut it for you. As you’re looking through site after site on the Web, take notes on what you like/dislike. Chances are, whomever you book will be very grateful for this as it will give him/her an idea of what you’re after. After all, the main objective of the photographer is to make you, the bride, happy. In addition to taking notes, look through wedding magazines (or any other kind of magazine) and tear out the pages of the photos you like. This will give you a visual representation of what you’re going for. Then, try to find the photographer in your area that will most likely be able to pull it off.

Take your time.
Always remember that when you’re looking for a wedding photographer, you are the boss (which isn’t to say you should be bossy…). Therefore, you are the employer and the prospective photographers are the hopeful employees. Take your time in selecting potential photographers and try to meet with one-on-one to get a better feel for who they are. Say, for example, Photographer One has really awesome work but a really intimidating personality – you don’t want to feel intimidated on your wedding day. Likewise, just because someone is super nice doesn’t mean he/she can take the kind of photographs you’re looking for. The perfect photographer should have a nice, pleasant personality, should be eager to know more about you, your fiancé and your wedding day, and should be able to cater to your photographic needs.

Your budget shouldn’t be your only consideration.
True, just because a photographer has low rates doesn’t mean you’re getting the best deal. However, it is also true that just because you pay big bucks doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting the best photographer on the face of the planet.
Let’s talk about the low-rate photographer first. Photographers who charge a low rate do so for many different reasons. Some are just starting out and need to build a portfolio. While these photographers are still learning, they’re also more likely to have new, fresh ideas. Keep these new photographers in mind – don’t totally rule them out.
Some only post their hourly rates and cleverly “hide” other pricing information – like the cost to print your photos. Sure, Joe Schmoe might only be $300 for the whole day… but you’ll be paying $20 for each 4×6… $30 for a processing fee… $200 for travel fees… and any number of other hidden costs. Calculate how much it will cost to book this type of photographer and estimate how much printing and travel fees will cost. You’ll probably find that these types of photographers end up being the most expensive.

And still, other photographers (like myself), are part-time professional photographers who have other full-time jobs and can afford to provide high-quality photography for such a low price. I take pride in my work but I also like to see the smiles on my clients’ faces when they tell me how much they love my work (and my price). Sometimes photographers who have low rates provide the same quality of photography (and sometimes a better quality) than those who charge $2,500 for the same package.
Likewise, just because a photographer is among the most expensive and has 30 years of experience doesn’t mean he/she is your best bet. True, said photographer will have been through all kinds of experiences and will know how to handle your great aunt who refuses to cooperate, or what to do when any number of things goes awry. But, you should also remember that a photographer with 30 years of experience is most likely not up-to-date on the new fashions and styles of wedding photography. Remember my wedding photographer I described at the beginning of this post? He had had plenty of experience with photography – he knew how to expose a picture and how to get sharp images – but not so much on how to achieve the photojournalistic approach I was looking for.
