Everyone thought it was just bananas.
Like that’s all it ever was.
One morning the hoard was gone.
Cave empty. Ropes quiet.
Even the air felt wrong.
Donkey didn’t say much.
He just grabbed his tie and started moving.
So I followed.
The island felt bigger than usual.
Like it was watching us.
Every step asked if we were serious.
The Kremlings laughed when they saw me.
Too small. Too fast. Too loud.
They stopped laughing when I didn’t stop coming.
I got knocked down a lot.
Launched. Flattened. Missed jumps I swore I had.
Every time, Donkey was still there when I caught up.
Somewhere between vines and mine carts,
I realized something:
Quitting doesn’t feel dramatic.
It feels reasonable.
So I stopped listening to reasonable.
We kept pushing forward.
Through snow that burned.
Factories that rattled.
Places that didn’t want us alive.
At the end, the bananas were there.
Messy. Half-stolen.
Still ours.
We didn’t celebrate.
Just stood there breathing.
Making sure it was real.
On the way back, the island didn’t seem smaller.
We were just steadier.
Because sometimes courage isn’t charging ahead.
It’s keeping up.
And deciding, every single step,
not to fall behind.
