Nobody Attacking The Odyssey Has Actually Read The Odyssey | Four Play
Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey spent a year being called woke by people who never opened the poem. Then it opened to $264 million worldwide and a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Richard Lewis, MonteCristo, and Thorin recorded this one last, after filming an entire Nolan arc worrying on camera about what he would do to Homer. All three landed between a seven and an eight, and all three reached the same verdict: the loudest critics exposed themselves. Calling the non-linear structure a betrayal means you never opened a poem that starts in the middle. Emily Wilson has publicly disowned Nolan's version. And Elliot Page is playing Sinon, not Achilles.
This is not two hours of dunking. MonteCristo, the classics enthusiast of the group, has a real objection: Nolan cannot stop explaining things, and mythology dies the moment you explain it. Helen was not taken because of Aphrodite, she was taken for the trade routes. The Sea People arrive unnamed. The Sirens are a throwaway. Thorin's counter is that it all serves the most original reading of the Odyssey in centuries: Odysseus does not fail to get home, he refuses to let himself, because of what he did behind the walls of Troy.
Plus: Benny Safdie's Agamemnon as Darth Vader, the Cyclops as Goya's Saturn, Samantha Morton's Circe, John Leguizamo as the dog, Elon Musk promising a Grok-generated replacement, and Julian Jaynes's bicameral mind theory as the reason Nolan made this film at all.
