Observation: A herd of Plains Zebras (Equus quagga) halting their approach to water after detecting a Nile Crocodile.
Behavioral Analysis: This is a textbook example of the Many-Eyes Hypothesis. Living in a herd increases the probability that a predator is detected before it attacks.
Vulnerability Management: Drinking is dangerous. By freezing and fixating on the water, the zebras are engaging in Risk Assessment. They are calculating the strike distance of the crocodile versus their own reaction time.
Alarm Signaling: If the threat moves, the herd will likely communicate via high-pitched snorts to alert other species nearby, effectively "blowing the cover" of the ambush predator.
