Why Aren't Crocodiles, Big Cats, Hyenas, and Apes Found in Europe?
The absence of large predators and primates like crocodiles, big cats, hyenas, and apes in Europe is due to a combination of historical, climatic, ecological, and geographical factors. Europe’s history of ice ages created harsh, cold environments unsuitable for these animals, leading to significant habitat changes. Many large animals went extinct during the late Pleistocene and early Holocene due to climate changes and human activities such as hunting and deforestation. Geographical barriers like the Mediterranean Sea and mountain ranges prevented the migration and recolonization of these species. Additionally, ecological niches in Europe have been occupied by other species, and human expansion has further limited suitable habitats. Despite some modern conservation efforts, Europe's heavily altered landscapes are less suitable for large predators and tropical species.
