Personally, after having used a proper electric vacuum desoldering tool for almost a year now, it would be hard to go back to solder wick, especially on dual/multi layer boards with plated through holes. Once you use an electric desoldering tool, you'll likely come to the same conclusion. They are awesome tools if you do a fair amount of through hole component repair or salvaging.
Like any soldering tool, a desoldering gun or desoldering station requires some practice to get the hang of; but all in all, they are pretty easy to use and get proficient at as shown in the video.
