I'm about as far as you can get from a designer. My day job is primarily working as a backend developer, and my first job out of college as a web developer lasted about a week before I got moved to the backend. I just don't have that designer's eye, and I don't know the theory behind design principles. That being said, it's still possible to create a compelling design by keeping things simple, and understanding what you like and don't like about other designs!

In this devlog entry, I'll show you how I created a striking design for my game's main menu. Farewell North is a game about restoring color to the world, so I leaned on that effect which I've received great feedback on in GIFs posted to Twitter/Reddit/Imgur to ensure the backdrop for my menu was going to be eye catching and consistent with the look and feel of the game.

If you're looking for inspiration to create a great looking menu for your indie game, but don't have a background in design, then this video is for you!

I hope you enjoy the video, let me know what you think of the menu design in the comments, and don't forget to like, subscribe and of course, wishlist the game on Steam!

Farewell North is my personal passion project, an open world adventure game about restoring color to a dark and desolate archipelago where all color and life has left. You play as a Collie working alongside your human companion to explore, solve puzzles, and restore color to the islands.
