World War II Documentary | "40 Days: The Fall of France"
World War II witnessed a struggle that left its mark on world history. The Treaty of Versailles, signed at the end of World War I, ushered in a period of great chaos and instability in Germany. Years of turmoil gave rise to a new government in the early 1930s. The National Socialists, who came to power under the leadership of Adolf Hitler, pursued an aggressive policy of revenge for Versailles. British and French efforts to prevent a new war proved insufficient, and the world was once again at war in 1939.
The German armies, which quickly invaded Poland, reoriented their course to Western Europe. The process that began with the occupation of Northern Europe led the German armies to one of their primary targets: French territory. As a result of discussions about the plan for the invasion of France, the plan devised by Erich von Manstein, known historically as "Fall Gelb" or "Sichelschnitt" (Sickle Putsch), was adopted. The operation, which began on June 10, 1940, in accordance with this plan, which thwarted the Maginot Line, built by France at the cost of billions of dollars, culminated in Heinz Guderian, Erwin Rommel, and numerous other accomplished commanders reaching the English Channel in a legendary 10-day campaign. France was effectively divided in half in just 10 days. The British Expeditionary Force (BEF) and other Allied armies were trapped in the pocket formed in Belgium and Northern France, falling victim to the German pincer maneuver.
Although the offensive was successful, the Allies would achieve miraculous success with the evacuation of Dunkirk, effectively preventing the complete fall of Western Europe to German control in the long term. Unable to resist the relentless German advance, the French were forced to sue for an armistice very quickly. The Battle of France would end with overwhelming German superiority at the Armistice of Compiégne, the armistice that ended World War I.
