COP23: The 2-degree target is moving dangerously away
COP23 opens in Bonn, Germany, this Monday and runs until November 17. Representatives from 196 countries, including the United States, are meeting to advance implementation of the Paris Agreement on climate change and strengthen their commitments. 2017 was marked by climate disasters such as Hurricanes Irma and Harvey. The United Nations Climate Change Conference is being chaired by Fiji, a small island nation particularly threatened by climate change.
This conference will take place in a tense climate. The latest climate reports, which are extremely alarming, and the reluctance of some countries to combat global warming are at issue. According to the UN Environment report, the goal of keeping global warming "below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels" is unattainable given the commitments made by countries at COP21. The challenge of COP23 will therefore be to encourage states to review their climate ambitions. […]
