Rostov is one of the oldest cities in Russia dating to 862. The city lies on the shores of Lake Nero and one of the "Golden Ring" cities in the region. Ravaged by the Mongols in the 13th and 14th centuries and the Poles in 1608, Rostov became a medium-sized town. The vicinity of Rostov is rich in old architecture.
