Corrosion can weaken these components over time, leading to leaks and potentially costly repairs. Also, water in the fuel tank can mix with the fuel, leading to fuel contamination. This can affect the combustion process in the engine, resulting in poor engine performance, rough idling, and potential engine stalling. Additionally, water in the fuel can cause damage to fuel injectors, leading to fuel system malfunctions. Moreover, water in the fuel tank provides an ideal environment for microbial growth, such as bacteria and algae. These microorganisms can thrive in the presence of water and organic material such as fuel, and can form slimy deposits inside the fuel tank and fuel lines. This can clog fuel filters and injectors, leading to engine hesitation and reduced fuel efficiency.

So, keeping the fuel tank empty for a long time will increase the risk of damage to your car. To avoid these issues and maintain the longevity of the fuel pump, it's advisable to keep the fuel tank at least a quarter full and adhere to regular maintenance intervals recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.
