When you connect with someone on LinkedIn, they become your connection. If you want to follow someone's content on LinkedIn without adding them to your network, you can choose to Follow instead of Connect.
In this video, I will show you the difference, and how to set your own profile to Follow first. If someone you want to connect with has their profile set to follow first, you can still send them a connection request by clicking on the More.. option on their profile.
