Written by Herman Hupfeld in 1931, "As Time Goes By" was a modest hit until it was used in the film "Casablanca" sung by the character "Sam" played by Dooley Wilson.
After the release of the film, the recording studio, "Victor" re-issued Rudy Vallée's 1931 recording, giving Vallée a number one hit in 1942.
Since that time it has been sung by many well known artists including Frank Sinatra, whose version, sung in the key of B, is the one my own interpretation is based on.
"As Time Goes By" has since become the representative song of Warner Bros. and was also the title and theme song of the 1990's British romantic comedy series "As Time Goes By", starring Dame Judi Dench.
