You can change the default PDF viewer on your Android phone by clearing the existing default app in Settings and then selecting your preferred PDF viewer, ensuring all future PDFs open with it automatically
Step 1 — Prepare Your Preferred PDF Viewer
Before making changes, install the PDF viewer app you want to use as default from Google Play Store. Popular options include Adobe Acrobat Reader, Google Drive, Xodo PDF Reader & Editor, Foxit PDF Editor, or WPS Office
Ensure the app has the necessary storage and file access permissions to open PDFs properly.
Step 2 — Clear the Current Default PDF Viewer
Open the Settings app on your Android phone.
Go to Apps or Apps & Notifications.
Find the app currently set as the default PDF viewer (e.g., Google Drive, Adobe Acrobat, Samsung Notes).
Tap on the app, then select Open by default or Set as default.
Tap Clear defaults to remove the current association
On some devices, you can also go to Settings Default Apps and clear the PDF viewer association if available
Step 3 — Set Your New Default PDF Viewer
Open any PDF file from your device’s storage, email, or messaging apps.
When prompted to choose an app, select your preferred PDF viewer.
Tap Always or Remember my choice to set it as the default for all future PDFs
For apps like WhatsApp, PDFs may open with its internal viewer. Clearing the default in settings allows you to select your preferred viewer when tapping a PDF in chats
