One-Take Covers #2: The Offspring - Gone Away

After 2 months of busy busy busy in my non-music life, I finally found some time to bang out another cover. Because it had been so long since I even touched an instrument, I figured I'd choose a song/band with relatively simple parts to learn. And since this one was already in my acoustic repertoire, I figured it'd be a fairly painless transition to a full-band cover. And while I wasn't wrong, I did end up having to re-record the whole thing after listening back to the first version and realizing it sounded like crap. I suppose that's what I get for waiting so long between covers. 🤷♂️
As someone who has lost multiple loved ones over the years, this song speaks to me in a pretty significant way. I tried to convey the pain and emotion in my vocal performance as best I could. I also decided on the fly while recording the guitar part to add a short solo to help set the mood even more; I knew where I wanted to start but not where I wanted to end, which resulted in the second half of it being a bit ugly. But I think it fits the mood of the music well enough, so I left it in.
Next up: a return to one of my favorite bands to cover! Hopefully this next one doesn't take another 2 months to complete. And thanks to Leonidas for making a brief cameo to help with the bass part. 🐶
As always, every part was recorded in a single continuous take with all mistakes left intact, and there is no pitch correction on the vocals, nor any processing other than EQ and compression.
