In this very specific video, presenter Maxi travels to the Zugspitze to find out what glacial melt in Bavaria has to do with climate change. He is joined by scientist Laura Schmidt from the operating company of the Schneefernerhaus, Germany's highest-altitude environmental research station at 2,650 meters above sea level (below the Zugspitze summit). Scientists from many different institutions work there, conducting continuous measurements and working on research projects.
Together, they first visit the Southern Schneeferner. There, they discuss why it lost its glacier status in 2022, the state of glaciers in Germany and worldwide, and the local and global impacts of glacial melt. Their second stop is the Schneefernerhaus. There, they discuss the research being conducted there and the effects of climate change already having in Bavaria and Germany.
