The fourth season of The Hidden Archive is now live, and to kick things off, we'll discuss a topic shrouded in mystery for centuries: OCCULTISM. But what does this word, which encompasses philosophy, magic, alchemy, astrology, and so many secret practices, mean?
To explain this practice, in today's episode, we'll revisit the Renaissance period, understand the origins of orders like the Golden Dawn, which influence practices to this day, and discuss figures like John Dee, creator of Enochian magic, and Eliphas Levi, responsible for popularizing the tarot and immortalizing the image of Baphomet.
But, beyond that, we'll delve into controversial figures like Saint Cyprian, the sorcerer-turned-saint whose book remains banned, and Aleister Crowley, known as "The Great Beast 666," the most famous occultist of the 20th century and inspiration for artists like Raul Seixas and even bands like Led Zeppelin. Is the Book of Saint Cyprian a dangerous manual or just a historical curiosity? LET'S FIND OUT!
And the term witches? Is it a sexist word? Was the gender division between witches and occultists simply to justify the norms of a patriarchal and misogynistic society? 👀
To help me in this mission, I invited Mariana Leal, a Wiccan priestess, guardian of women's circles, and founder of the collective Respeita as Bruxas da Quebrada (Respect the Witches of the Quebrada), and Inês Barreto, a historian, master's and doctoral candidate in History at PUC-SP, and a researcher of witchcraft, magic, and macumba. Together, we will explore how magic was considered a deviation from religion, how it shaped pop culture, and how far we can go when we talk about power, spirituality, and mystery.
