Earlier this month, SAE hosted a virtual SAE Extra masterclass with accomplished VFX professional, Hussin Khan, who joined us via Zoom all the way from Malaysia.
As a friend of SAE Liverpool Game Art Animation and Web Development Programme Coordinator Firdaus Khalid, Hussin was more than happy to explain how he got into the VFX industry and to give the attendees some tips and tricks for how to secure a futureproof job in this sector.
Hussin worked as part of the production team behind the Academy Award-winning films Life of Pi, Snow White & the Huntsman, X-Men: First Class and Golden Compass, whilst at Rhythm & Hues Studios, and he is also the CEO and founder of EFXCO, one of the first Authorised Adobe, Nuke & Unity training centres, where he has taught his artistic strategies and techniques to thousands of people.
SAE UK was joined for this masterclass by attendees from around the world, with SAE Paris student Antoine Sedik saying: “Truly inspiring. It has motivated me to work even harder!”
To begin with, Hussin talked about how he was inspired by movies such as sci-fi films like The Black Hole (1979), Tron (1982) and Star Wars (1977). He spoke about how his favourite film is Blade Runner (1982) for its groundbreaking VFX work.
He explained that in the 90s he started playing around with Lightwave on a Commodore Amiga, as well as Adobe AfterEffects 4.0. He landed a job with Rhythm & Hues as an educator but had to go through lots of interviews to get in the door. This VFX house is famous for making animals for films such as Snow White & the Huntsman, Life of Pi etc. The attendees all marvelled at one scene in Life of Pi, which at 30 hours per frame x 24 fps took 30 days per second to render!
EFXCO is an Authorised Training & Certification for ADOBE, UNITY, NUKE & SUBSTANCE PAINTER/DESIGNER based in Cyberjaya Malaysia.
