Private IP vs Public IP Explained Simply (2026) — What’s the Difference?

Welcome back to NetWorks!

In this video, we explain the difference between private IP addresses and public IP addresses in a simple beginner-friendly way.

Your phone, laptop, smart TV, printer, or gaming console usually has a private IP address inside your home, school, or business network. But when your device connects to the internet, websites usually do not see that private IP directly. Instead, your router uses a public IP address from your internet service provider.

The simple difference is:

Private IP addresses are used inside local networks.
Public IP addresses are used on the internet.

Private and public IP addresses are one of the most important beginner networking concepts. Understanding this difference will help you understand home networks, business networks, routers, DHCP, DNS, default gateways, NAT, and how devices reach the internet.

By the end of this video, you’ll understand why your device has a private IP inside your network, why your router has a public IP on the internet side, and why NAT is needed to connect the two.
