Mother's Milk - Kaeni
There’s a line in the song, “The silent hanging guidance of the moon.” In my spiritual and cultural heritage, the Moon is a feminine energy, reflecting the light of God – the light of Life – in the darkness when it is most needed. Through mothers, the future of all life is sustained. So the visualizer is a silhouette of my inspiration, Azin, pregnant with our second child…she holds the Moon as a representation of all mothers and all women…and the cycle of life through day and night is perpetuated in her existence.
This song is an invitation to join me in celebrating mothers, especially mothers in immigrant families, who, amid the upheaval of our lives, raised us to be good human beings with strong and ancient values. Mothers are responsible for the continuity of culture, for the continuity of life and spirit. Mamas are particularly central figures in East African and East Indian cultures – and their roles have spiritual significance in Eastern philosophies and Faiths.
