Imagine a big, heavy hippo - one of the largest animals on land! You might think they move slowly, but don't let their size fool you. Hippos are actually quite quick when they want to be!
When a hippo runs, it uses all four of its strong, sturdy legs. These legs may look short compared to its large body, but they're very powerful. Each foot has four webbed toes that help the hippo push off the ground.
As the hippo begins to run, it leans forward and lifts one of its front legs off the ground. It pushes off with its back leg on the same side. Then, the hippo does the same with the other side of its body, alternating legs as it moves along.
The hippo's big body bobs up and down a bit as it runs, because of its short legs and hefty weight. And even though hippos are quite heavy, they can run quite fast - up to 20 miles per hour!
Interestingly, hippos also have a unique way of moving in water, where they spend most of their time. Instead of swimming on top of the water like a duck or a frog, hippos actually 'run' along the bottom of the river or lake, pushing off with their legs to propel themselves upwards and forwards.
So, whether on land or in water, running is a key part of a hippo's movement. Despite their size, they're not as slow as you might think
