Hey what's up guys, Eduardo here for another review, and today we are going to be looking at this small guy right here. The Canon EF-S 24mm f2.8 STM pancake lens. Woah that's a mouth full. That's what she said. Let's get started by taking a look at its built quality and features.
Built Quality and Features:
This pancake lens, as the nickname suggests, is quite thin. When compared to other lenses from canon it is one of the smallest, if not the smallest (shot of it alongside other lenses). The majority of the body is plastic, but it does not feel cheap oddly enough. That is due to the metal mount that this little lens sports. There is only one switch that comes equipped on this lens and that is the AF to MF switch that allows you to change from Autofocus to Manual Focus. When in manual focus you can use the built in focus ring which is extremely smooth to operate. Quick side note on the focus ring: because the lens is so thin, the ring is not like other conventional focus rings that are much wider and allow for a follow focus to be attached. So if you are thinking about buying this lens for filmmaking, just keep that in mind. Ok so now let's get into the good stuff and see how this little pancake lens performs by first taking a look at the picture quality.
Picture Quality:
When out using this lens one will notice that pictures come out sharp and colors are vibrant. With its 24mm frame, it is suitable for both wide landscape photography or close up macro shots. For macro the lens can get as close as .16m to a subject and produce beautiful soft backgrounds thanks to the 7 aperture blades it comes with.
Video:
At 24mm, this lens is ideal to use for establishing shots, wide shots or close ups. Chances are that if you are looking to get this lens for filmmaking then these shots are the ones you would most likely be using it for. The lens unfortunately does not come with image stabilization so if you decide to go handheld, your videos will come out shaky. For autofocus in video mode, your results will be different from mine depending on what camera body you have. I use a Canon T5i which struggles at times to focus right away, but if you have a 70D or the new 80D you will get better results. But there is always the option to switch from AF to MF and in my opinion, focusing on subjects manually is much more satisfying because you are in control of the shot.
Night time:
The f stop of 2.8 is very important because it means that the lens can let in more light and therefore be used at night.
This is when the pancake lens is the most fun to use. Because of its wide aperture, the nightlife can be captured and be clearly visible in pictures and video.
Final thoughts on this little pancake lens.
Pros:
small and will not add a significant amount of weight to your camera
Great picture quality
Smooth focus ring
Macro is amazing
Cons:
No image stabilization
Focus ring is really thin
